Eight years of development wasted: Valve shuts down the Classic Offensive project
A fan team spent nearly eight years working on the Classic Offensive mod for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (now more relevant to Counter-Strike 2). The goal of the project was to bring back the atmosphere and gameplay of Counter-Strike 1.6, but in a modern form using an updated Source engine.
The whole concept was somewhat reminiscent of earlier attempts like CS Promod – aiming to combine classic, proven gameplay with a modern technical overhaul. Interestingly, Valve itself once had a similar vision, but that effort didn’t turn out as expected.
Unfortunately, players will never get to experience Classic Offensive. The developers hit a major roadblock when they submitted the mod for approval through Steamworks – instead of approval, it was rejected.
According to the creators, the situation is hard to understand. Back in 2017, the project successfully passed the Steam Greenlight process, and they also made sure everything was legally sound. They even communicated with Valve at the time, with no indication that there would be any issues.
They also pointed out that throughout the entire development period, Valve never issued any warnings or raised objections. Now, the team is trying to get back in touch with Valve, hoping the situation can still be resolved.
This raises the question: why didn’t Valve step in earlier? Some speculate that the project may have been seen as potential competition for Counter-Strike 2.
In the end, it’s fair to say that the community has lost a promising project that could have successfully blended nostalgia with modern gameplay.
